About the 6th IANYS Global Conference on National Youth Service
3-6 September 2002

The 6th Global Conference on National Youth Service (International Association for National Youth Service) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The conference delegates represented 27 countries as well as many organisations that promote national youth service (NYS). The conference was hosted by the Education Secretary of the Buenos Aires City Government, 'Programa Escuelas Solidarias', and organised with the help of:

  • Fundación SES
  • Latin American Center for Service-Learning (CLAYSS)

The organisers are very grateful for the support given to the conference by the Ford Foundation, offered through the Global Service Institute (Center for Social Development-Washington University/Innovations in Civic Participation in Washington, DC.)
See complete list of sponsors.

Conference themes:

  1. Review of national youth service (NYS): The 'state of the art' of NYS in the world:
    Selected speakers presented a synthetical review of NYS world situation based on reports prepared by national delegates.
  2. The impact of NYS as national and international policy:
    Countries with strong social, cultural and economic differences are developing NYS programs. Which are their reasons to promote youth service as a social, youth, cultural and/or educational policy? How are we measuring the impact of NYS in different programs and countries?
  3. The impact of NYS in young people's life projects and accomplishments:
    'Service changed my life' is an usual statement from young people after going through an NYS program.The conference aimed to develop recommendations to help maximize the positive impact of NYS on young lives.
  4. NYS and service-learning:
    What do children, teenagers and young people learn when they learn to serve? The conference aimed to give a broad approach to successful service-learning practice around the world.

Conference proceedings

  • Plenary sessions gathered all the delegates together, allowing for general discussion on the conference's central themes of the Conference and for the approval of general recommendations;
  • Simultaneous sessions: participants with similar interests discussed in small groups the central topics of the conference and shared experiences and useful information;
  • Exhibition hall and bookstore: Delegates presented information on their programs, and shared information and bibliography. A bookstore was also available with NYS books and materials on sale;
