23 April 2007:
Highlights of the IANYS Steering Committee meeting held in conjunction with the Global Service Forum in Albuquerque, New Mexico in late March 2007 are given below. At this meeting, six of the nine members of the Steering Committee were present. The information below comes from an email sent by Don Eberly, Honorary President of IANYS, dated 23 April 2007:
In accordance with Article IV of the IANYS Charter, we decided to accept the proposal from Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP) to become the permanent Secretariat of IANYS.
As recommended in the ICP proposal, we decided to replace the Steering Committee with a Global Council and to give the chairperson of the Global Council the executive authority now held by the Honorary President., who assumes what was referred to in the Steering Committee meeting as an ambassadorial role.
At the urging of the members of the Steering Committee, Dame Elisabeth Hoodless, Director of the UK's Community Service Volunteers and organizer of our 4 GC in Windsor Castle in 1998, agreed to serve as Global Council Chairperson.
As Director of Innovations in Civic Participation, Susan Stroud becomes Executive Director of IANYS. This is the position that had been filled in recent years by the Global Conference organizers. Susan has participated in several IANYS Global Conferences. She was the first director of Campus Compact, an American association of universities involved in service-learning, and helped organize the Corporation for National Service initiated by President Clinton in 1993.
The aim of these changes is to better enable IANYS to advance the aims of our Charter, including the resumption of our Global Conferences.
More details will be forthcoming shortly.
As you know, we discussed possible changes to IANYS at the 7 GC in Ghana in 2004 and have continued the discussion since then via email. I think the above changes reflect the views of members for strengthening IANYS and advancing our mission.
Sincerely, Donald J. Eberly
Honorary President
The 7th global conference due to be held in August 2004 was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
